‘The Sinner’ in All of Us

The Sinner | Season 1 Episode 1

**May contain spoilers***

The Sinner is an anthology series that explores the depth of why the average person would commit a brutal crime. In season 1 we are following Cora, a young mother and wife, who kills a stranger for no apparent reason.

Initially Cora seems like an average woman who is currently going through the motions of life. She and her husband, Mason, have a slight disagreement about who will watch over their son. Eventually Cora compromises and agrees to have Mason’s mother babysit despite her discomfort. When Cora and Mason are intimate she looks completely disconnected. She is uninterested in the encounter but goes along with it anyway.

The next day the couple takes a family trip to the beach. Cora seems a bit off but she is still tending to her motherly duties. She goes for a swim and ends up out of bounds as she is in deep thought. Mason gets concerned because he was unable to find her. Cora returns as if nothing happens and kisses her baby. She sets her eyes on a couple nearby. They are kissing, playing around and simply enjoying the beach. For some reason Cora keeps staring at them. Cora runs towards them and stabs the boyfriend as she screams “Get off of her”. Immediately Mason grabs her off the man and calms her down. Chaos erupts; people are screaming and crying as the man clings onto his life. Honestly this scene is a little gory, beware.

The police arrive and Cora is arrested and she confesses to her crime. She seems remorseful but the whole situation is very strange. She isn’t on any medications or drugs and yet she did something so psychotic. Detective Ambrose suspects there is more to the story and attempts to dig deeper.

We see a flashback of Cora’s childhood where we see her mother is clearly mentally ill. She blames Cora for her sister’s illness. This family dynamic resurfaces in future episodes. We cut back to the present day and a witness from the beach informs Detective Ambrose that he thinks the victim and Cora might know each other. Although this review is for this episode in particular, I have seen the whole series. The show keeps you on edge as the story unfolds. I was definitely intrigued to learn more.
