- ‘The Sinner’ in All of Us
The Sinner | Season 1 Episode 1 **May contain spoilers*** The Sinner is an anthology series that explores the depth of why the average person would commit a brutal crime. In season 1 we are following Cora, a young mother and wife, who kills a stranger for no apparent reason. Initially Cora seems like an average woman who is currently going through the motions of life. She and her husband, Mason, have a slight disagreement about who will watch over their son. Eventually Cora compromises and agrees to have Mason’s mother babysit despite her discomfort. When Cora and Mason are intimate she looks completely disconnected. She is uninterested in the encounter but goes along with it anyway. The next day the couple takes a family trip to the beach. Cora seems a bit off but she is still tending to her motherly duties. She goes for a swim and ends up out of bounds as she is in deep thought. Mason gets concerned because he was unable to find her. Cora returns as if nothing happens and kisses her baby. She sets her eyes on a couple nearby. They are kissing, playing around and simply enjoying the beach. For some reason Cora keeps staring at them. Cora runs towards them and stabs the boyfriend as she screams “Get off of her”. Immediately Mason grabs her off the man and calms her down. Chaos erupts; people are screaming and crying as the man clings onto his life. Honestly this scene is a little gory, beware. The police arrive and Cora is arrested and she confesses to her crime. She seems remorseful but the whole situation is very strange. She isn’t on any medications or drugs and yet she did something so psychotic. Detective Ambrose suspects there is more to the story and attempts to dig deeper. We see a flashback of Cora’s childhood where we see her mother is clearly mentally ill. She blames Cora for her sister’s illness. This family dynamic resurfaces in future episodes. We cut back to the present day and a witness from the beach informs Detective Ambrose that he thinks the victim and Cora might know each other. Although this review is for this episode in particular, I have seen the whole series. The show keeps you on edge as the story unfolds. I was definitely intrigued to learn more.
- ‘Your Honor’, May I Have A Word?
Your Honor | Season 1 Episode 1 ** May contain spoilers** In this series, Bryan Cranston (the guy from Breaking Bad) stars as a judge who must protect his son at all costs. They came out the gate swinging with this one! I was hooked within the first 15 minutes. Early in the episode we see a terrible car accident where the driver hits a teenage boy on a motorcycle. Mind you, the motorcyclist got the bike that day as an early birthday gift. Watching him get hit during his first joyride was tough. But seeing the guilt and wave of emotions of the driver was brutal too. When I tell you, they do a great job showing us how terrified the driver was; I was nervous, scared and on edge for a good 10 minutes. You can tell he feels terrible, and he is just a teenager himself. Adam panicked and wanted to help but it was too late. To his defense he got out of the car and attempted to do CPR. After calling 911 his anxiety causes him to have a full blown asthma attack to the point where he could not speak. Once Adam, the driver, found his inhaler he dipped. I don’t blame him; anyone at that age would probably do the same. The show cuts to a courtroom scene, where we see a judge ruling over a drug bust case. I love this scene. Later, the judge asks the defendant’s son what they ate for breakfast. He responds saying pickle juice! Imagine having 3 younger siblings and drinking pickle juice for breakfast. The context of this struggle, along with weak evidence, is why Judge Desiato rules in favor of the defendant. But this judge happens to be the father of the driver, the plot thickens! When Adam gets home, he tells his father about the accident and we find out that today is the anniversary of his mother’s death. His dad grills him about the details but Adam is too overwhelmed to speak and has another crippling asthma attack. The father decides they have to turn him in and tell the truth, but you can see he is unsure if that is the best route to go. Once they get the precinct Michael (the father) goes inside without his son and he sees the dead boy’s hysterical parents. He recognizes the father of the victim and leaves at that point. He tells Adam they have to go and he can’t turn himself in (watch the show to find out the tea, it’s a game-changer). Now I’m like what are they going to do? The father gets rid of Adam’s clothes and dumps it over the river. Bad move; he should’ve burned it duhh. But of course, this is a show, not real life. I have a feeling that evidence will make its way back somehow. To make matters worse, the police found Adam’s inhaler at the crime scene. And so it begins! I am not sure what is next, but I know I am in for the ride!
- The ‘Big Sky’ For All to See
Big Sky | Season 1 Episode 1 **May Contain Spoilers** I had no expectations for this show because I randomly selected it without knowing what it was even about, but the writers wasted no time and jumped into the story. This series is about private detectives Cassie Sewell and her partner Cody Hoyt searching for two missing teenagers. But, there’s a juicy twist. Cody’s estranged wife and an ex-cop join him and Cassie on their crazy search. It gets cringy and crowded once Jenny (Cody’s wife) confronts Cassie and asks if she is sleeping with her husband. Based on her lack of response, it is clear she is the other woman. What a spicy way to start a show! We are then introduced to Ronald where his mother is patronizing him because she is not pleased with his career choice. I don’t completely blame her. He is a 39 year old trucker driver still living at home, but that is no reason to judge. Parents sometimes give us tough love as a form of motivation. The show is set in Montana and the scenery is so beautiful! Lots of trees and mountains, such a gorgeous view. At a truck stop a prostitute hops in Ronald’s truck and he tries to make a connection with her right before he proceeds to tase her in the neck. I was not expecting that, he must be a psycho or something. Later, in a bar Cassie tries to explain her affair to Jenny but she is not buying it (neither would I). The two end up getting into a bar fight and to make matters worse apparently the women are friends or associates. Cassie definitely earned the stitches she got. How are you going to be the other woman when you are well acquainted with the whole family? Once someone confides in you about their relationship, that person is off limits. Ronald in a heated rage nearly runs a teenage driver off the road. Danielle (the driver) gets so upset and is determined to cut him off. Bad move, this man is actually crazy. Although she succeeds, Ronald follows her, gets out the truck and kidnaps her and her sister. The girls were heading to see Danielle’s boyfriend but when they never showed up, the search for them begins. Cody, the cheating husband, happens to be the boyfriend’s father. He immediately heads out on the road to see if he can find them and connects with the local state trooper, Rick. Plotwist! Rick is actually in on the kidnapping. I won’t spill the beans on how we figure this out; you have to watch the show for that one. I really like how the characters are introduced and how the story begins to unfold. This was a great first episode to start the series.
- Is ‘Bad Hair’ Your Worst Nightmare?
Bad Hair | Film Review **Contains Spoilers** Anna, an assistant at a television station, attempts to elevate her position at the company by getting a new weave. She did not anticipate all of the baggage it came with. Based on the trailer I wasn’t too sure what to expect but I gathered this movie would be horror-ish. Well..... it’s giving satire, lowkey horror, with a sprinkle of folklore. Sounds a little weird but Bad Hair had a lot going on. I’ll start with the good, loveee the pop culture in this film. It is set in 1989 and it shows! Costume and set design is definitely on point! Lots of color filled with nostalgia. Plus we had some great stars, Kelly Rowland and Vanessa Williams. I was pumped at first. The characters had braids, wigs, weaves and natural styles too! Even the way it was filmed, it has such a 90s vibe. Anna wants to impress her new boss so she decides getting a weave would be her golden ticket. She finesses her way into getting an appointment with LA’s top hair stylist. As the weave is being installed it gets very cringey (but I’m pretty sure that was intentional) you hear daunting music and you see close ups of the needle going into the braids. Sis is crying from the pain plus she’s tender headed. We see the needle irritate her childhood perm burn. Gross, I know. It was a lot but like they say beauty is pain. Now here is what confused me. She got a weave but the character was actually wearing a wig (IRL). So the wig was essentially the “weave” and something about that was off to me. The entire plot is about her weave but she’s wearing a wig. I guess the Black woman in me finds this strange. Anywho, as soon as Anna sees herself she instantly feels like a new person. I’m sure we all can relate to that feeling. Virgie, the hairdresser, told her not to get it wet. Remember this is 1989, probably before wet and wavy. First day out, sis is already patting the weave but I’m assuming that’s where the satire comes in. We know the weave itch doesn’t really start that soon. Anna uses Virgie’s essential oils to soothe the irritation and guess what it is! The pink lotion ! Another nostalgic moment. When Anna tries to finger comb her hair, the weave cuts her finger. Like bleeding and everything. As the movie continues we see that the weave feeds off of blood and needs it in order to maintain its style. Tell me why the weave started killing people ! Like the hair took over her body and legit killed people. That’s when it got even more crazy. If the weave didn’t get its feeding it started to get matted and look ugly. Plus if you tried to cut it out, it would kill you too. The movie went downhill for me after that or maybe I just didn’t get it. Vanessa Williams’ weave started killing damn near everyone in the office. In the end Anna killed her weave by getting it wet by the office sprinklers. The movie had some triggering scenes that almost every Black woman can relate to like, when younger Anna got a perm and her cousin burned her!!! I remember those days when I couldn’t take the burning any longer. But ultimately the film fell short. I enjoyed the vibes of the movie but the story just was off.
